Q’s on the Handicap system

In 2020, the World Handicap System was modified in order to make is more transferrable. around the world and level the playing field. This change has loads of benefits, but some of the calculations can be tricky..

But don’t worry about the higher math! In 2021, Maryland (and Woodmont) transferred our handicap system to GHIN, which has been widely used in other states. GHIN can 1) provide course handicap calculations for you, 2) let you keep score hole-by-hole and it will adjust your scores accordingly, and 3) allow you to post your round score in seconds from your phone. The GHIN app also includes a GPS.

If you don’t already have GHIN on your phone, download it from the app store and the pro shop can help you set it up.

The Putting Studio

One aspect of the golf shop renovation over the winter that I see a number of people taking advantage of is the improved putting studio. The specialized carpet allows golfers to see results more easily when using the lines. Players can set up at different distances and use the guides to practice consistent stroke distance both back and through and use the lines to the holes to work on alignment.

My favorite way to use the lines is to test and measure players type of stroke and how consistent it is. Most players have an arc in their putting stroke rather than a straight back and through pendulum stroke. It is important to know what type of stroke you have and that you have the proper putter to match your stroke. If you have a putter with a lot of toe hang and you take the putter straight back and through you are setting yourself up to be more challenged at the start. The same goes if you have a lot of arc in your putting stroke and you use a big mallet face balance putter. In this case the putter will not as easily rotate like it should through the stroke. If you are unsure of any of this, just ask myself or one of the professional staff to take a look at your stroke and type of putter to see if it’s a match. It takes less then 5 minutes and its one of the great benefits of using the putting studio.
